We are all aware of the legend of Troy and none other than Brad Pitt brought it to the cinema screen way back in 2004. It has recently been announced that 2018 will be The Year of Troy which will coincide with the 20th year anniversary of the ancient city of Troy’s recognition by UNESCO in its World Heritage List. It is estimated that in excess of 700,000 tourists will visit Çanakkale to celebrate the culture and arts events due to take place at this time; this will be a massive boost for tourism in the area and in Turkey as a whole.
The Museum of Troy will be opened to visitors as part of the celebrations and the Museum will showcase pieces that were smuggled from the ancient city and returned to their rightful home in Turkey thanks to the efforts of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
The ministry has also expressed that they will invite world-renowned Hollywood actors who starred in the film “Troy” including Brad Pitt, Diane Kruger, Eric Bana and Orlando Bloom. It’s safe to say that if these famous actors descend on Turkey it’s more than likely the expected number of tourists in the area will flourish.
This is costing the Culture and Tourism Ministry TL 50 million ($14,565,000), the Museum of Troy is being planned on opening next year in 2018. It will be one of the few museums constructed in design with the flair of a contemporary museum. Located on an area of 10,000 square metres in total, 3,000 of which is assigned for exhibits, the museum will feature pieces which were abducted abroad and then returned to their rightful homeland.
Helen of Troy’s personal collection of jewellery including 24 pieces of gold jewellery that were given back to Turkey after 125 years will be exhibited in the museum. The art world is to be included in the celebrations as announced in the events in Çanakkale (Dardanelles) in 2018, are the Turkish State Theatres and State Opera and Ballet who are to perform plays and musicals with the Troy theme as their background.
Foreign experts and presentations by them containing 3D animations of the War of Troy, the ancient city’s thousand-year-old story will be told once more celebrating the famous battle that took place. The International Games of Troy, in which athletes from all around the world will compete in various games, will increase participation in the project. An exciting addition to the line up announced to perform is the fabulous Turkish dance company Fire of Anatolia which will be on the stage with their Troy themed performances.
This looks like an exciting and informative cultural event detailing the Battle of Troy and will be a great event to go to. Hopefully, fingers crossed the stars of the film “Troy” will be in attendance too which will no doubt create a buzz of excitement that will ripple through Turkey. Waiting in earnest for the dates, I’m sure it will be captivating!
