For years expats from across the world have moved to Turkey but they have chosen only a handful of locations if they have children in full time education. Usually they will head to Istanbul and Izmir where there are international schools that teach in English. However in recent years we have seen a change and expat families with children of school age are now moving away from the crowded and bustling cities and heading to the beautiful Bodrum Peninsular.
Bodrum has been a popular holiday destination for the last 40 years however it’s fast becoming an international hub. The growing interest in Bodrum is attracting educational institutes who are eagerly searching for the best sites to build their campuses. It is already home to some of the finest including TED College, American Culture College, Doga Schools and Bahcesehir College. Its not only foreigners who are decamping from the major cities we are seeing an influx of wealthy Turkish families moving to Bodrum for a better quality of life without their children’s education suffering as a result.
For example TED College is based just 7km from the town centre of Bodrum it is the oldest private school in Turkey and the first to teach English. It is internationally recognised and audited as a top quality educational institution and opened its school in Bodrum in 2012. The facilities are second to none and the fact that they teach in English is a massive draw for expats and Turkish families who want their children to have a head start in life. The students also choose a third language to learn and they will continue to learn this from primary to university degree level.
The fact that these schools and colleges are in such a beautiful location as Bodrum is a welcome bonus. As the reputation of these schools grow so will the number of expats opting to move there on a permanent basis. Bodrum has been a cosmopolitan city for decades but the game has been well and truly upped in recent years, it is becoming more internationally renowned with increased airport travel to both its domestic and international airports just 30 minutes from the city centre.
Bodrum is a favourite due to its marinas, up market resorts and exquisite architecture. Now we are beginning to see the big guns arriving en masse in the form of big name hotels, exclusive shopping brand names and designer stores. This area is probably better known for its luxury villas than apartments and top designers and architects are showing off their unique designs on exclusive development in the Yalikavak area. World famous Richard Meier the US abstract artist best known for his modern designs on the Getty Centre has infused traditional Turkish designs with a modern twist in his designs for luxury villas in Yalikavak.
Families who want their children to have a private education will also want to live in beautifully designed homes and Bodrum has plenty of those for sale. This location has always been popular with those who prefer something a little more upmarket with like minded people. Of course it goes without saying you will pay more for property in Bodrum but currently you can buy a 3 bedroom detached villa for sale in Yalikavak with a private pool and just 300 metres from the seafront for only £194,500 and Yalikavak is a mere 15 minutes drive (9.7km) from TED Colleague.
Many families would like to leave the likes of the UK behind them for a better life in the sun and many opt not to do so until their children’s education has finished. Many don’t like the thought of relocating to busy cities like Istanbul or Izmir but now they have the option of Bodrum. Over the next couple of years Bodrum will flourish and we will see families from across the globe deciding to up sticks and relocate there. There will be many international schools opening their doors to offer their services and it’s a superb chance for these families to take advantage of that offer.
Beautiful Bodrum is a safe, clean city that has retained its traditional charm and offers picturesque settings from everywhere across the Peninsular. Yes it does get busy in the summer months in the city centre but that is to be expected, however head to the many surrounding villages on the outskirts and peace and calm reigns supreme. This is a truly wonderful location to raise a family so why not give it a try?
