Turkey is well known for its beautiful coastlines but it has to be said that it’s most exclusive resorts that can be found are Bodrum and Kalkan. These outstandingly picturesque locations are found in south west Turkey, Bodrum is on the Aegean Sea and Kalkan on the Mediterranean Sea. Bodrum and Kalkan have been described as the jewels in Turkeys crown and it’s not difficult to see why – holidays taken here are both vibrant and blissful and many who visit return time and time again to each location.
Upmarket locations spring to mind when one thinks of these areas:
Bodrum – brimming with life
Bodrum is vibrant and full of life; not hustle and bustle although at times it can be busy, especially during the main summer season; nevertheless it retains a certain charm. It is one of the most enchanting cities packed with history and beauty. There is culture, architecture, historic monuments, a swanky marina and it has its very own castle.
There are many beaches along this stretch of coastline with plenty of upmarket beach clubs that will cater to your every whim, plus a promenade that literally takes you from one end of Bodrum to the other. All along this promenade, are cafes, bistros, bars and restaurants that serve a range of Turkish and international cuisine including fine dining. Nightlife is varied with open air nightclubs and you can hear everything from the music of today to disco and jazz the choice is yours.
Designer shopping is popular here with trendy boutiques and beautiful jewellery shops that could break the bank if you let it. There are however antiques and souvenir stalls and if you fancy a day at the art gallery you can buy local artists exhibits to take home with you.
During the main season daily boat crossings take you to the nearby Greek Island of Kos which is only 20 km (12 miles) across the Aegean Sea. It’s perfect for a days sightseeing in Greece or if you prefer sail around the nearby coves and enjoy the views of Bodrum from the sea.
Kalkan – picturesque and charming
This market town is charming with its pretty narrow streets that lead down to the bay where you will be met by panoramic views of the crystal clear turquoise sea. Indeed many who have visited Kalkan have fallen in love with it and return often to visit this little piece of heaven. Delightful white washed houses are ablaze with hot pink and vibrant purple bougainvillaea giving splashes of colour as they creep up their walls.
Beach lovers will be pushed to find anywhere more relaxing than Kalkan’s white sandy beaches with many of them being amongst the best in Turkey. Patara and Kaputas beaches are the favoured hang outs along with beach clubs serving delicious dishes and the very latest cocktails you can find – this is how to relax, soak up the sun and simply enjoy!
There is an array of water sports based activities along the bay including scuba diving; speed boat trips, water skiing, wake boarding and mono-skiing, Jet Ski and paddle boarding plus numerous relaxing boat trips around the bay. For the shoppers amongst you, you will be delighted with the range of shops where you can buy ceramics and carved wood pieces, fine art prints and original work, many are by local artists.
Along the pretty harbour is a superb selection of excellent restaurants, cafes and bars and of course fresh fish is the speciality, it’s the catch of the day. In the evenings the harbour and surrounding areas come alive with acoustic guitars and soft music creating a calm setting to enjoy a glass of bubbly and dine al fresco where you can sit and relax and immerse yourself in the ambience of Kalkan.
Bodrum and Kalkan offer a different theme of holiday but both areas have something to offer the traveller who appreciates the finer things in life. The rich and famous are known for frequenting both of these areas and they could visit anywhere in the world. It all depends what you want in a holiday destination, if you are searching for a holiday home both of these resorts offer a wonderful range of properties to suit most budgets.
What are you looking for in a Turkish resort? Picturesque and charming or brimming with life? Turkey has some lovely resorts but Bodrum and Kalkan are the most exclusive in my opinion and I adore them both for their different qualities.
