I think what we have to remember is that people of retirement age or just under are generally in very good health, we are much fitter than ever before and living longer. With that in mind folk in their early sixties want much more than just a bungalow with a garden and somewhere to “potter” near the coast in the UK. On retiring its now time to go on an adventure, move somewhere where the climate is warm and sunny with plenty of things to do and it wont break the bank.
I personally know lots of people who live in a small village just outside Bodrum who have done just that, sold up in the UK bought a beautiful villa and enjoy their life. There are quite a few places in Turkey where you can enjoy retirement, Fethiye, Kalkan and Kas spring to mind but I think Bodrum ticks all boxes and upmarket Yalikavak in particular is a favourite. Located on the Bodrum Peninsula there is a lovely expat community who are like minded and want the finer things in life.
What type of property is there in Yalikavak? – There is a great range of property for sale in Yalikavak and something for every budget; you can currently buy a 3 bedroom 3 bathroom detached villa with a private pool, less than 300 metres from the sea front for less than £198,000. If your budget allows (and I’m sure we all wish we had this money to play with) how about an 8 bedroom 8 bathroom detached luxury villa with a private infinity pool, set in extensive gardens with panoramic views for a tad over 3.9 million. It also comes with a separate cottage and a studio which is perfect for artists and musicians, the rich and famous too which this area attracts. Ok, I know it’s not your average budget but as I said there is property here to suit all, you can buy luxury apartments too but generally, when expats are permanent residents a villa offers more space and outside living which makes it the preferred choice.
What is Yalikavak like? – English is widely spoken in this chic resort where it has retained its charming traditional character whilst embracing new and modern. The heart of this small town’s main attraction is its large harbour which is surrounded by classy restaurants and swish designer boutiques. Luxury yachts are moored here as well as local fishing boats and as you can imagine fresh fish is definitely on the menu. Strolling around the pretty tree lined streets where local artists exhibit and sell their art make for a lovely day out. Small cafes and restaurants are plentiful and it’s a super spot to stop for lunch and catch up with friends. Restored windmills are a familiar sight in Bodrum and Yalikavak has its fair share and they add to the quaintness of this delightful town. The golden sandy beaches are where you need to head to for a relaxed day to top up the tan. Yalikavak is conveniently situated just 15km from the centre of popular Bodrum which means you can easily dip in and out of a more upbeat scene whenever you want.
What is Healthcare like? – the general hospitals offer excellent care and treatment however it is recommended to take out private health insurance and I can say from personal experience the hospital in Bodrum is more like a 5* hotel with English speaking Doctors and superb medical care.
How far is Yalikavak from Bodrum Airport? – One of the main advantages of buying property in Yalikavak is it is only a 45 minute transfer from the airport to the centre of the town. This is ideal for expats when travelling back to the UK or Europe for example. From Yalikavak you can explore more of the Bodrum Peninsula or indeed more of Turkey itself. The bus service in Turkey is wonderful and inexpensive, friends of mine decided to go by bus from Bodrum to Antalya on the Mediterranean Coast which is around 290km away it cost less than 100tl (approx £16) each and refreshments were served frequently (included in the price of the ticket). If a bus isn’t for you domestic airports are scattered throughout Turkey so you can fly literally everywhere again at low cost.
Travelling around delightful Turkey is what most expats do with their time and why not? With 8000km of coastline to discover and exciting cities like Istanbul to visit it makes for the perfect retirement – don’t you think so?
