Fethiye is an idyllic spot on the Turkish Coast and receives over 600,000 British tourists alone every summer. Indeed this lovely area is home to many expats who fell in love with this region and decided to buy a holiday home in Fethiye. Its proximity to other areas of outstanding natural beauty is a magnet for many and everyone is catered for in the Fethiye region.
Beach lovers are not disappointed with stunning Blue Flag awarded beaches in abundance. Visitors who appreciate flora and fauna will be delighted with the wildlife and countryside landscapes. For those who like nothing more than delving into the regions history and culture will be captivated by its historical ancient sites, tombs and museums.
Tourists are drawn to the Fethiye area because it ticks so many boxes, whatever it is you are looking for in a destination you will find it in one of the many surrounding villages in the Fethiye area, it’s a fabulous area and one I visit every year so let me tell you what each area has to offer:
Fethiye – appeals to everyone – Fethiye is fun for all from young couples and friends wanting lively nightlife to families preferring something more relaxed. That is the beauty of Fethiye all tastes are catered for with beach clubs and delightful little restaurants and cafes that line the pretty marina. Nightlife is varied it all depends what you are looking for. Fethiye Museum is rich in ancient and recent artifacts, displays and testifies to the range of civilizations that existed in the area, beginning with the ancient Lycians. Fethiye is home to the Tomb of Amyntas, a beautiful tomb built in 350 BC by the Lycians. This tomb is unique due to its colossal size and intricate carvings.
Olu Deniz – beaches galore – Is one of the gems in Turkeys crown for sure, this picture postcard setting has graced many magazine covers with its white sandy beaches and striking cobalt blue lagoon, it’s a favourite of mine and many others who visit here. It is one of the most photographed beaches on the Mediterranean because it is amazingly beautiful. The Turkish Government have said they will protect this area and they have done well so far. If you are looking for paradise and you don’t want to fly long haul to find it – simply visit Olu Deniz only a 4 hour flight form the UK to Dalaman International Airport which is only 1 hour away. Olu Deniz is also famous for its paragliding activities – not for the faint hearted!
Hisaronu – Lively and upbeat – If you like beaches and nightlife this is the place for you, there is lots going on in Hisaronu with plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants and as night falls the centre comes alive with music and laughter. Overlooking the lagoon at Olu Deniz, Hisaronu sits on a mountain plateau affording marvellous views plus there are plenty of shops and gift shops in the centre of the resort.
Calis – spectacular sunsets – During the summer months the road is closed to traffic and it’s lined with shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. The beach here stretches for 2 miles and is coarse sand and shingle which is ideal for the water sports activities available here such as windsurfing, water skiing and scuba diving to name just a few. Water taxis link Calis to Fethiye and they run every 20 minutes from 9am – 23.30pm in the summer.
Ovacik – relaxing and laid back – Ovacik is next to lively Hisaronu and this is where you can have relaxed peaceful days away from it all. Enjoy cosy afternoons at a café, bar or restaurant soaking up the sun or indeed sightseeing. If you want more hustle and bustle Hisaronu is literally next door to you, basically you can have the best of both worlds in Ovacik.
Uzumlu – peaceful countryside location – This is where you can holiday and let your shoulders drop and breathe in the fresh countryside air. It is one of Turkey’s spectacular natural beauty sites, set in a valley surrounded by dense pine forest and rugged hillsides it’s located in the foothills of the Taurus Mountains just 20 minutes away from Fethiye.
